September 15, 2015 marked the release of one of the most popular games the Internet has known. UNDERTALE quickly captured the hearts of many, but the game didn't sway me like it did others. I've gone months without knowing what this game was. It was only in November when I started see art of two skeletons in blue and red circulate in my inbox. Who were they? What were they from? Why were they skeletons? Later that day Markiplier posted the first episode of his Undertale play through. Admittedly I didn't check it out for a few days because the graphics pushed me away. What can I say? I'm picky! Soon I gave in and decided to watch it, and I was speechless. The game was incredibly... I can't even explain it. It felt magical. The game puts us in a world below the surface, where the goal is to make it to the end in order to escape. You're expecting to have regular RPG bad guys, but instead you're met with lovable characters with their own hopes and dreams.

That's another thing I really like about this game. The characters are charming, all of them! They all have their own personalities and quirks that makes them them. Aaron, Temmie, Jerry, So Sorry, Snowdrake, they are all full of personality with enough wiggle room for the player to interpret them to their choosing. Another thing to notice is that none of the characters in the game are "bad guys." They're just normal, weird nice dudes! It's strange how welcoming this game is with its characters, and the closest character fitting the villain role is you, the player (see video below explaining why Chara isn't the villain).

Not only are the characters enjoyable, but there are important lessons to be learned from the main cast. Each character has their own problems that they need to get control over. Once you help them the lesson is soon apparent and can be applied to our lives if thought about!



Frisk teaches us to be kind to others.

Toriel teaches us to let go of our fears for the sake of others.

Sans teaches us to keep pushing forward and smile when things look rough.

Papyrus teaches us to never give up on our dreams, but also that friends can be the best dream.

Undyne teaches us that it's not right to be judgmental toward a group of people and that you should try befriending instead. 

Alphys teaches us to love who we are and be brave when facing our problems.

Mettaton teaches us to value our friends, family, and friends.

Asgore teaches us to forgive ourselves for our past mistakes.

Asriel teaches us to embrace our memories and move on.

Chara teaches us to make amends when we make mistakes.

Flowey teaches us to be kind to those who need it.

And the world of Undertale teaches us that our actions have an affect on the people around us, whether it be good or bad.



The lesson is kindness, but there's no way we can be perfect. We will make mistakes and say/do things we regret, but that's okay! I know I've had my fair share of things I've regretted, things I've done and said that still haunt me as far away as six years ago to five months. What matters is that we don't intentionally hurt the other. That's what Undertale wants us to learn. Let's try and be kind to others. It's not easy, but just trying can make our world better than it was before. Make people happy! Hear people out! Befriend those who you notice are alone! Just one compliment can make someone's day, and one action can change someone's perspective on things. We should be good and spread kindness wherever we go. There'll always be Floweys in the world, but that's why we gotta show love.
